Dennis was excited to see the birthplace of aviation. Since Dennis is a pilot, Grant noted that Orville and Wilber were Dennis’s forefathers. The site was very interesting and well done. It was very hard to imagine that the entire place was just sand dunes back then.
This tall hill is covered with grass and plants so that it will not erode. They used this hill for their glider flights before they tried using an engine.
A replica of the day of the first flight from the top of the hill
Silly “boys”
At first they stayed in tents and then they built these 2 buildings…one to live in and one to use as a hangar
Inside the visitor’s center
Here you can see the path of the 4 flights. The first 3 did not go very far but the fourth one went much farther…you can see the stone markers marking the distance of each flight…the 4th one is way to the right and much smaller
This is what impressed me the most…in just 66 years we went from a first flight of any kind and a short distance to flying to the moon!
